Can pregnant women protect their children from asthma?

Allergies and asthma are still common in young children. There is currently no real therapy. In this respect, the issue of prevention is of great importance. Many studies have investigated whether it is possible to reduce the risk of the baby developing asthma during pregnancy. One of the research questions is whether it is possible to reduce the risk of babies developing bronchial asthma by taking omega 3 capsules during pregnancy.

The Study situation The answer to this question is not clear. Some studies indicate that an effect can be achieved if women take omega 3 capsules during pregnancy, while others have not been able to show this effect.

One study that was able to demonstrate the effect of omega 3 capsules is based on a comparison of the intake of fish oil capsules with a placebo (olive oil), conducted by an international team of Researchers has published.

They were able to show that children whose mothers had taken omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil during pregnancy had an almost seven per cent lower risk of developing asthma later in life than those children whose mothers did not receive fish oil capsules.

For the study, a group of women received daily fish oil capsules in the third trimester of pregnancy, while a comparable control group only received olive oil capsules. The children of all the women involved were then followed clinically for five years. Result: If the mothers took fish oil in the third trimester of pregnancy, their children had a significantly lower risk of asthma and lower respiratory tract diseases in comparison.

More and more people are developing asthma. Many factors play a role in this. Diet, environmental and stress factors, but also the use of antibiotics during pregnancy and in infancy play a role. Not all of these risk factors can be influenced by pregnant women. This is precisely why it is worth taking a look at dietary habits, but also at changes in the feeding habits of farm animals that serve as food for humans. The type of feed also has an influence on the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to the important omega-3 fatty acids in human food. The proportion of valuable long-chain, polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids in fish such as salmon, tuna and herring in particular, which are generally considered to have a high proportion, also depends on their food sources.

TIP: Even if the medical guideline Although there is not yet sufficient evidence to recommend that all pregnant women take Omega 3 prophylactically to prevent allergies, this valuable oil is nevertheless an important nutrient component of a healthy diet and important for the healthy development of the baby. As a midwife, sleep coach for babies and children and first aid trainer, I help women and parents to organise their pregnancy, birth and time as parents in a good and relaxed way. I am a mum of two adorable children myself.

Children should be able to grow safely and securely. To achieve this, they need strong parents who support their children's development with knowledge and intuition. My midwifery support should give parents the knowledge and confidence to find and follow their own individual path.
