Initial equipment

The arrival of your baby is something very special, and our checklist for the first outfit will help you to think of everything.

Checklist for the hospital bag

Passport or identity card (copy if necessary)
Marriage certificate, or certificate of registered civil partnership or acknowledgement of paternity, declaration of custody if applicable
Birth certificate of mum and dad, siblings if applicable

Hot water bottle
Cherry stone bags

Checklist for the initial equipment

The clothes for your baby

4-8 baby bodysuits (long-sleeved) - size 50/56
4-6 trousers
4-6 baby rompers preferably with feet size - 50/56 (are also suitable as pyjamas)
2-3 baby hats (long ribbons can be wrapped around the baby this way. Then the ribbons are not in front of the neck and the bow is on the baby's side)
4-8 jumpers or cardigans - size 50/56
2-4 tights - size 50/56
3-4 pairs of socks
1 woollen blanket
2 pairs of woollen socks

Nappy changing and care

Disposable nappies (for newborns) / cloth nappy system
6-8 muslin cloths
6 molleton cloths
Baby bathtub or Tummy Tub
2-3 towels for the baby (hooded towels)
Flannels (wet wipes are handy for travelling)
Disposable flannels or paper towels / cotton pads Changing table
Changing mat
Changing unit
Radiant heater
Nappy pail
Bowl for the wash water
Thermos flask for the wash water
Digital, waterproof clinical thermometer (you can also use it to check the temperature of the bath water)
Baby nail scissors (look at the scissors. Products that look like craft scissors are too big for small baby nails. Choose metal scissors with blunt tips)
Baby brush (natural hair) / baby comb
Baby oil made from vegetable oil, e.g. almond oil
Wound protection cream
Saline solution (NaCl 0.9 %) in plastic ampoules

Feeding the baby

For breastfeeding mums:

2-3 nursing bustiers
1 nursing cushion
1 breast pump
2 nursing shirts
Breastfeeding tea
Nursing pads
Nursing pads with silver threads (against inflamed, irritated nipples)
Breast pump (if necessary, you can get a prescription from your doctor and borrow it from the pharmacy)
Breast milk bags for freezing
Lanolin cream to care for your nipples

If you don't want to or can't breastfeed:

Bottle feeding
6 bottles and teats (size S to M)
Thermos flask for the water
Teat and bottle brush
Vaporiser
Bottle warmer
Dummy (soother)

The baby's sleeping place

1 extra bed
1 cot
1 firm, air-permeable mattress
2-3 fitted sheets
2-3 bed linen
1-2 mattress protectors
2 baby sleeping bags / pucksacks
Puck cloth

Toys

1 wardrobe
1 night light
1 music box
1 highchair for the time when your baby can sit up (before that, your child should lie down or sit on your arm. So you don't need a rocker).
1 baby monitor
Child safety locks in the sockets
Stair guard / cooker guard
Crawling blanket: for older babies to play and discover
Soother if necessary (please only use when breastfeeding is working well)
Cradle / hammock

For travelling

Pushchair with footmuff or blanket (make sure it has good suspension so that bumps in the road don't weigh your baby down)
Child car seat (TÜV-tested and/or GS test mark) or safety system for the hard shell of the pushchair
Sling or carrying system
Changing bag
A separate travel cot is practical for overnight stays when travelling
