How a breast massage works

How a breast massage works

You do this massage yourself:

There are various massage techniques that you can perform yourself. They are simple and only take a few seconds. It is important that you are so careful with your breasts that you do not apply any painful pressure.

If you want to stimulate the milk flow reflex before breastfeeding or pumping, or treat swellings and lumps in the breast, you can help yourself with the massage technique described.

Place one hand on your chest from above and the other from below and make a pushing and pulling motion with your hands without removing your palms from your chest. The hands move towards and away from each other.

In the next step, grasp the breast with both hands so that the thumbs are on the upper side and the remaining four fingers of the hands are on the underside of the breast. Now carefully stroke your hands from above towards the nipple.

Finally, place two, three or four fingers - as you prefer - on the breast and massage small circles. The fingers do not change position on the skin. This transfers the movement into the depths. Take a little time for this so that you can repeat these circles from the body towards the nipple on every part of the breast.

Now you can breastfeed the baby. The milk flows more easily. Your baby has to suck less strongly.

A back massage will also help you:

Many women have a tense back at the beginning of breastfeeding. They are tense because latching on is not yet routine, breasts hurt or the baby is crying with hunger. There are countless reasons for this. The reflex for the milk flow runs via the spinal cord. A tense back can therefore exacerbate the problems. A massage of the shoulders and back can help. This does not necessarily have to be a professional massage. Any loving touch will bring the necessary relaxation.

But if you have a little time for massage, then this back massage will help:

Either stand in front of a table so that you can support your arms comfortably or sit on a chair so that you can use the backrest to support your forehead. Let your breasts hang down. Now massage your back from top to bottom. Use circular movements on both sides of the spine. The circular movements should also go under the shoulder blade. To finish, massage the back from top to bottom and side to side.

As a midwife, sleep coach for babies and children and first aid trainer, I help women and parents to organise their pregnancy, birth and time as parents in a good and relaxed way. I am a mum of two adorable children myself.

Children should be able to grow safely and securely. To achieve this, they need strong parents who support their children's development with knowledge and intuition. My midwifery support should give parents the knowledge and confidence to find and follow their own individual path.
